Let’s discuss the root issue of having a negative mentality. You have probably told yourself at least once that you need to be positive, stay positive, think positively or, even more likely, these words have passed your lips to be directed at someone else. Having a positive attitude has become an extremely popular phrase and key ingredient to success shared in the majority of if not every, self-help book. Knowing that we need to be positive is one thing, accomplishing it daily is another.
We have a tendency to be very positive on the outside yet very negative internally. I wonder if you put yourself down today, called yourself stupid / fat / ugly, or told yourself you couldn’t do something. If you desire to change, want more for yourself, or are looking to be more successful, you have to change your mentality first.
How to change the way you view and think about yourself:
Every day, I want you to find a way to compliment yourself throughout the day. Look in the mirror and see what is awesome and unique about you. You are no longer allowed to look in the mirror and pick at every so-called flaw that you think you have. See your beauty.
At work when you are frustrated or overwhelmed, pause and compliment yourself on all you have accomplished up to that point. Tell yourself how awesome you are and how you know that you will complete so much more of your to-do list because you’re a freaking super woman and that’s what you do.
When you get home and you’re exhausted but you still make dinner, take time for you kids, and drink too much coffee, recognize your amazingness.
Every time you put yourself down, turn it into a compliment.
2. Forgive Yourself
Something will go wrong. No matter how positive you are, you will make mistakes along the way. You may eat an extra cookie or miss your workout. You may lose your temper or forget about an appointment. Forgive yourself. You are an amazing and wonderful human. There is nothing wrong with you. So what if you blew your diet today? That’s what tomorrow is for, to start again. Brush yourself off, give yourself some grace, and kick ass tomorrow. Your health and wellness are not defined by one bad day.
3. Find Your Mantra
Is there a quote that lights you up inside? Have you thought about putting all your passions and dreams into one phrase to say to yourself every day? Having a mantra may seem silly at first but it can have a huge effect on your life by keeping you focused and reminding you of your goals. There are many different kinds of mantras and you can have more than one that you use on a daily basis depending on your goals and what areas of your life you are looking to change. 4. Be Thankful
Having gratitude puts you in a positive state as well. Place a notepad on your nightstand and every night before going to bed, write out everything you are thankful for from that day. This will give you a peace before falling asleep as well as shed any negative emotions of energies that you were carrying. Practicing gratitude is a great way to change your mentality to a positive one.
5. Fool Yourself (Take Your Own Advice)
What is the best version of yourself that you really desire for your future? Think about this in depth. Better yet, get a pen and paper and write down the qualities and traits this person has. Is she strong? Fit? Healthy? Successful? The CEO of a specific company? Is she a badass? Is she sincere? Happy?
Determine who she is and start acting how she would act. Make decisions on a daily basis that she would make. Would she eat five cookies in one setting? Would she skip her workout? Would she leave work early? Instead of making statements such as “when I’m skinny / healthy / fit / successful / etc.”, start acting as though you already are and you may be surprised by how fast you become those things.
